The BFEF Learning Garden

(aka The Sprouts Learning Garden)

Established in 2010 to promote environmental education, the BFEF Learning Garden was transformed in 2023 through a generous $5,000 grant from Cigna. With a dozen raised beds, fruit trees, and shaded tables, the Learning Garden provides a space for all students and teachers to learn or simply enjoy the outdoors.

BFEF dedicates $20,000 annually so that every K-6 class can receive environmental science lessons outside with a specialized teacher. There, students can learn about life cycles of plants and animals, native plants, which plants are edible (and taste them!), food chains, water cycles, soil composition, and more. Our students' time in the garden reinforces the K-6 science curriculum and aligns with California State Science Standards.

The BFEF Learning Garden is also used by the Green Team to work with Franklin's Kinder students on vermicomposting (composting with worms). The rich compost keeps our gardens healthy, and Franklin's Kinder students benefit from contact with the soil and a better understanding of how plants grow.
